23-year-old jazz singer Samara Joy was awarded Best New Artist of the year at the Grammys Award Show on February 5th.
“To be here because of who I am, authentically just being myself, I’m so thankful,” said Joy during her acceptance speech.
Samara Joy was always destined to perform. A Bronx native, Joy grew up in a musical household. Her paternal grandparents were founders of a Philadelphia-based gospel group called The Savettes. Joy began performing in the choir at church and eventually enrolled in a Jazz studies Program where she found her passion for musical performance.
According to an interview with People Magazine, Joy stated she would place her Grammy award in her parent's house, where it belongs.
Samara Joy gained massive amounts of fame by performing on the TODAY show and gaining millions of likes on her TikTok platform. Joy is on the horizon to be named the first jazz artist of Gen Z, combining authentic jazz undertones with a modern twist.
Samara Joy has caught great amounts of social media attention after releasing a cover of Ella Fitzgerald’s “Take Love Easy,” on her TikTok platform. Joy has even received attention from the influential producer Timbaland after releasing her talent on social media.
Although Joy has been performing Jazz music since high school, she didn’t release her first solo album, Linger Away, until September 2022. The top track listings are “Can’t Get Out of This Mood,” followed by “Guess Who I Saw Today” and “Nostalgia(The Day I Knew).”
Along with winning the high honor of Best New Artist, Joy was awarded Best Jazz Vocal Album for her album “Linger Awhile,” which was released in September 2022.
Although winning a Grammy award is a massive accomplishment in the entertainment industry, this is not Joy’s first musical accomplishment. According to CNN, Joy won the Sarah Vaughn International Jazz Competition in 2019 at the age of just 20. Let’s continue to celebrate the success of Samara Joy!
