MaryKate Kreuger: February 14th, 2023
54-year-old David Jolicoeur, commonly known as “Trugoy the Dove” or “Plug Two,” passed away Sunday, February 12th. The artist was a member of rap group “De La Soul.”
Jolicoeur was known for his stylistic vocabulary and eccentric freestyling, which was often incorporated into the group's tracks dating back to the 80s. The group was known for its lighthearted and often humorous lyrics, which captivated R&B fans and changed the trajectory of mainstream hip-hop.
Here are five essential tracks from the group as a tribute to David Joliceour:
De La Soul, “Me, Myself, and I” (1989)
One of the group's biggest hits, this song is about expressing individuality and celebrating self-love. Incorporating dry humor into the lyrics, this hit is light-hearted, cheerful, and unique to the R&B genre during the time.
De La Soul, “The Magic Number” (1989)
From album ‘3 Feet High and Rising’, this iconic song is known for its chorus, “Three is the magic number,” referring to the band's three members.
De La Soul, “Breakadawn” (1993)
From the group’s album “Buhloon Mindstate,” ‘Breakadawn’ samples Micheal Jackson’s ‘I Can’t Help It,’ making it one of the most popular songs from the group.
De La Soul, “Stakes is High” (1996)
Originally released as a single, this song later became the title of their album released in 1996. It was later revealed that this track was a tribute to Joliceour’s cousin, “Fudge,” who passed away before the song's release.
De La Soul, “Itsoweezee(Hot)” (1996)
Performed solely by Trugoy the Doug, this track has remained one of the most prominent from the group for decades.
