The man known as the world’s first “turntablist” will receive his dues during hip hop culture’s 50th anniversary.

According to AllHipHop, the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) will award GrandMixer DXT with the Hip Hop Innovator Award at the NAMM Awards Show. The award honors GrandMixer DXT and his work in giving the turntable a name in music, such as when he participated in the making of Herbie Hancock’s Grammy winning song “Rockit.” GrandMixer DXT acknowledged NAMM with the statement about how he was, “...honored to be recognized for this contribution to the arts as the latest model of the ancestors that came before…”

The NAMM Awards Show returns in conjunction with the TEC Experience, with TEC members also sharing their excitement on GrandMixer DXT’s recognition. TEC committee members Tony Baraz and OP! Miller shared about GrandMixer DXT, “DXT is at the foundation of turntable performance and innovation. His early works laid the foundation for the art form and collaboration. They were influential in forwarding DJ culture and technology, influencing others who came after him…”

The NAMM Awards show will be held in Anaheim, CA on April 13, 2023.
